Thermal Direct printers can only print on thermal labels (heat sensitive labels). Thermal Direct printers do not require ribbons. However, the print image on the label will fade over time. If you wish to print on plain paper or plastic label stationer, you will require a Thermal Transfer printer.
This Zebra S4M will allow you to use a Thermal Direct mode by omitting the ribbon and using thermal labels. This option is ideal if you require the label print to be visible for very long period.
If you choose to use this printer as a Thermal Transfer printer, then you must use a resin ribbon (for use with plastic labels such as polyethylene or polyester), or a wax resin ribbon (for use with paper label).
